Diabetes meet-ups are becoming more and more popular. I was fortunate enough to attend two this past weekend!
After posting about the meet-ups, I received numerous messages asking me to do a meet-up in other places! As much as I’d love to just travel and do meet-ups in every state and city, I unfortunately do not have the funding for THAT much travel. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have a meet-up in your area!
Diabetes meet-ups aren’t organized by anyone in particular or any group. Anyone can create a meet-up! The great thing is, there are really no resources required to have one. You can meet at a beach, a bar, a park, an event…anywhere! You may be asking, “What do you do at a meet-up?” The funny thing is, an agenda isn’t really needed. When you put a bunch of diabetics together…we somehow all find something to talk about!
Ready to host your own Diabetes Meet-up? Here are some tips:
- Pick a time and place that’s pretty central. People are more likely to come when it’s an easy place to find/get to, there’s parking, and the time is less likely to conflict with other commitments (like work).
- Make sure your event does not conflict with other diabetes events. If there’s a conference or another meet up going on that many will be at, less will be able to come.
- Partner up! Do you know anyone else in your community with diabetes? The more that advertise, the more likely you will reach other diabetics in the area.
- Reach out to someone on social media with a lot of followers with diabetes. I will gladly post any meet-ups on my personal social media to spread the word, so reach out! Most of us are more than happy to do that for other meet-ups, even if we are unable to attend.
That’s really it. Now go for it! Arrange a meet-up and send it my way, I’ll post it to my social!
